Hardscape Project: Drainage & Retaining Wall in Newark, DE

Trying to Find a Professional Landscape Contractor?

Here's a tip for clients seeking a professional landscape contractor such as Pro Image Landscaping: Make sure that if you want to start your project in early spring when April comes around, you should expect to call about two months before you plan. This way you can meet your start date expectations while considering construction time as well.

A look at the building of the new drainage system.

We have clients who call us after the winter holidays in January and February because they know the reputable companies book up their spring schedules very quickly. That's exactly what our client Mr. Jack had in mind when he contacted us in February for his spring renovation.

When we got his initial call, I jokingly said- "Planning to get the jump when the weather breaks?" He had called a few companies but we were the first to respond to his call and set up an appointment. At the consultation we talked for over an hour about his ideas and plans. Jack's plan was to expand his side driveway by width and depth to accommodate a larger mobile home they use for traveling throughout the year.

We service Wilmington, Newark and Hockessin Delaware as well as Garnet Valley, West Chester, Chadds Ford and Kennett Square Pennsylvania and neighboring cities in DE, PA.

Water Management Done Right!

Another look at the progress of the new retaining wall being built.

There were a lot of factors to determine regarding this project's success. The most important was water management. If water continually saturates an area of the ground it usually causes instability over time. The old Creosote timbers had to be disposed of properly at the landfill and the client chose to replace the timbers with Cambridge Matryx wall in gray tones of color with matching color wall caps.

Adding Retaining Wall & Weep Holes

The water management of this project had to incorporate weep holes for the retaining wall to relieve the pressure and the sloped yard with downspouts and rain water running towards the wall. We had to make sure all the water was properly piped, pitched and routed where no water accumulation could cause any future settling problems. The way we solved this problem was by routing and connecting the bottom retaining wall drain and tied it in to the existing downspouts. The water was routed to one area of the garden which we filled with 1-3" Delaware river rock to prevent any erosion of the overflowing water. There we go—problem solved!

Check Out What We Did With Their Driveway Pavers...

An after look at the new paver driveway with the retaining wall around it.

The final phase of the job was to repurpose the usable paver units the client previously used for the driveway pavers. Most of them were in good condition so we used them in a mixed pattern with the new pavers acting as the border perimeter course as the client wanted. At the end of the project after we did our final walk-through with the client, he couldn't have been happier with our crew's work.

The hospitality from Jack and his wife were great, always asking if we needed anything and treated our crew members with respect as they worked diligently and respectfully the whole time we were on his property. By the way, Jack does have plans for us to come back and redo some front yard hardscaping that was not done correctly a few years ago by another hardscape company.
