Outdoor Fireplace and Patio, Middletown DE
New Home Construction
In Middletown, Delaware over the last few recent years the city has seen quite a lot of new home construction there and is increasing rapidly. A new home has all the interior finished, so some popular new additions to the new home is usually updated landscaping, outdoor low voltage accent lighting and an outdoor living room or patio installed. When we got a call from a retired couple in the middle town community, we spoke for about 15 to 20 minutes on the telephone discussing what they had in mind.
We service Wilmington, Newark and Hockessin Delaware as well as Garnet Valley, West Chester, Chadds Ford and Kennett Square Pennsylvania and neighboring cities in DE, PA.

Client Request for Outdoor Fireplace
One of their priority requests was to have a fireplace be there on the patio or adjacent to the paver patio for enjoying on cool fall evenings or to just relax at the end of a hard day, staying comfy and cozy with some hot chocolate.
Proper Building Codes
When we arrived at the consultation, we surveyed the area for level differences, took all of the measurements we needed to be sure the fireplace would follow building codes. It must be a certain distance and height away from the home and roof. Please check your local building codes for specifics as some townships may be different.
After everything checked out the design and location of the outdoor fireplace couldn’t have worked out better. We ended up putting the fireplace to the rear of the patio which centered nicely with the doors exiting the house.
Cambridge Ledger Stone Design
The client chose to go with a Cambridge three-piece ledge stone design concrete paver in toffee onyx color with the same color border course done in a 4“ x 8“ brick style border course. For the hardscape steps we used Cambridge matryx 6 inch wall and 6“ x 12“ bullnose treads for the 6 foot wide by 3 foot deep landing with two steps coming down to the patio floor.
Building Code Tips
According to building code the landing must be a minimum of 3 feet extending from the house for the top landing; this is a standard building code. If your hardscape contractor tells you it’s OK to go smaller, it’s not! When you go to sell your home and the inspector sees the steps that need to be up to code you will need to rebuild them to code in order to pass inspection. There was also an egress from the basement located closely to the hard scape steps. It’s advised not to build around this so we just made a small simple multicolored river jack stone bed for some small plantings.
Our outdoor patio design consisted of a small nook for a dinette near the steps and the patio shape opened up to a 24 foot diameter circle with a beautiful modular fireplace centered in the rear of the patio circle. A nice clean simple design that softens the hard lines of the homes exterior and with the addition of a few well-placed landscape beds, turned out quite beautifully and the customer was very pleased.
The construction of the outdoor patio had to be done ¾ of the way to make sure we lined up perfectly with the edge of the outdoor fireplace.
Outdoor Fireplace Kits
Cambridge has an assortment of pre-fabricated outdoor fireplace kits of many sizes shapes and budget prices. The concrete base must be a minimum of 6 inches of concrete for a small 30 to 32 inch wide outdoor fireplace. However with the bigger units it is advised to have 2 foot deep pylons on every corner of the concrete slab with one in the center to make for a stable structure that will never move. Layer by layer the construction of the modular fireplace only took about a day and a half including all of the aluminum vent and capping. They’re built for simplicity, integrity and make an awesome addition to any outdoor living space or patio.
